๐Ÿ’ปโœจ Coding Questions Kids Ask!

Teacher Valarie is here to answer the BIG questions!

Have you ever wondered what coding is really like?

Maybe you've seen someone making a game and thought:

โ€œWaitโ€ฆ can I do that too?โ€ ๐Ÿค”

YES! And today, Teacher Valarie is answering some of the questions kids ask most.

๐ŸŽฎ โ€œCan I make a game?โ€

Absolutely! YES, YES, YES! ๐Ÿฅณ

You don't have to wait until you're older to make your own game.

With coding, you can create things like:

๐Ÿ•น๏ธ A game where a person collects coins
๐Ÿฑ A game where you take care of a virtual pet
๐Ÿš€ A space game where you dodge asteroids
๐Ÿ† A quiz game where you earn points
๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ An adventure game where you find hidden treasure

You can even decide what your characters look like and what happens when someone clicks, moves, jumps or wins.

Teacher Valarie says:
"When you learn to code, you don't just PLAY games. You can learn how to MAKE them!" ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ˜ฐ โ€œIs coding hard?โ€

Sometimes coding can feel a little tricky.

But you know what?

Learning to ride a bicycle was tricky at first too! ๐Ÿšฒ

You probably didn't jump on a bicycle and immediately race down the road.
You learned one little thing at a time:

โžก๏ธ
Balance
โžก๏ธ
Pedal
โžก๏ธ
Steer
โžก๏ธ
Stop

Coding works the same way.

We start with small things, practise them, and then put them together to make something AMAZING.

And when your code doesn't work?

That's not failure!

That's called debugging. ๐Ÿž

A bug simply means:

โ€œSomething didn't work the way I expected. Let me figure it out!โ€

โž— โ€œDo I have to be REALLY good at maths?โ€

Nope! ๐Ÿ˜„

You don't need to be a maths genius to start coding.

Coding does use numbers sometimes, but you will also use:

๐Ÿง Thinking
๐Ÿ”Problem-solving
๐ŸŽจCreativity
๐ŸงฉPatterns
๐Ÿ’กIdeas
๐Ÿ“šReading and understanding instructions

So if you enjoy puzzles, building things, drawing, stories, games or figuring out how things work...

You already have some of the skills that coding needs! ๐Ÿš€

And guess what?

Coding can even help you become better at thinking through maths problems because you practise breaking big problems into smaller steps.

๐Ÿ’ป โ€œDo I need an expensive computer?โ€

Not at all!

You don't need a giant computer laboratory with 20 screens and blinking lights. ๐Ÿ˜‚

You can start learning with a computer that can run the programs you are learning with.

For example, at Code With Valarie, children can explore:

๐Ÿฑ Scratch โ€“ for creating games, animations and stories
๐Ÿ Python โ€“ for learning real programming and building fun projects
๐ŸŒ HTML & CSS โ€“ for creating your own webpages

The important thing isn't having the fanciest computer.

It's having a chance to learn, practise and create. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ‘ฏ โ€œCan I show my friends?โ€

PLEASE DO! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸŽ‰

Imagine making a game and then telling your friend:

โ€œI made this!โ€

Your friend plays it...

BOOM! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

You just became the game creator!

Four smiling children gathered around a laptop together outdoors, looking at what one of them made

You can show your projects to:

๐Ÿ‘ซ Friends
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Parents
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ Teachers
๐Ÿ‘ต Grandparents
๐ŸŒ And even people online, when it's safe and appropriate!

You could create a game for your family, make a funny animation for your friends, or build your very own webpage.

Your project doesn't have to be perfect.

It just has to be YOUR creation. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐ŸŒŸ So... Can YOU become a coder?

Let's see!

Do you like...

โ˜Making games? ๐ŸŽฎ
โ˜Solving puzzles? ๐Ÿงฉ
โ˜Drawing or creating stories? ๐ŸŽจ
โ˜Exploring how things work? ๐Ÿ”Ž
โ˜Coming up with your own ideas? ๐Ÿ’ก
โ˜Telling a computer what to do? ๐Ÿ’ป

If you said YES to even one of these...

You might really enjoy coding! ๐Ÿš€

At Code With Valarie, we believe children shouldn't just learn about technology.

They should learn how to CREATE with it. ๐Ÿ’œ

No child left behind.

Every learner gets the time and support they need to understand, create and have fun.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿ’ป Teacher Valarie's Challenge

If you could make ANY game in the world, what would you make? ๐ŸŽฎ

Would it be a...

Draw your game idea and give it a name!

Who knows?

You might code it one day! โœจ
